Bowes Gallery: Royal Seal of approval

The Duke of Gloucester has officially opened the refurbished Bowes museum including the most recent Inscape project - a gallery housing the decoration and ornament collections: English Interiors 1500-1900.

The gallery uses sections of wall panelling acquired in the 20th century and  furniture and items from the Museum’s collections to offer an insight into British style and ornament from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

The panelling acts as a signpost to evoke the taste and lifestyles of the inhabitants of each period, leading visitors on a journey of discovery through four centuries of British style.

The Duke said he was glad to join the staff to mark the completion of the refurbishment and said the museum was different not only “because of where it is”, but because it is “what you would expect to find in a city museum”.
